If you wouldn’t wear it in front of your Grandmother, you shouldn’t wear it on a plane.
In generations past, flying was a special occasion - women would dress up in their nicest of dresses and men would throw on their clean suit. Today, on a rare occasion I will catch an elderly flier at the airport dressed in their spiffy outfit.
But those days are long gone.
Typical gear for most fliers today is jeans and a t-shirt. It’s comfy, it’s causal and it’s easy to pick out of the closet. Sure, there are the businessmen on every flight in their nice suit with their briefcase – but we all know that if they weren’t flying for business they’d be in jeans and a t-shirt too.
Now there is a point where the line is drawn between “comfy, casual & easy” and “trashy, inappropriate & easy (and I’m not talking about the “simple” easy, I’m talking about the other easy)”.
So where is the line drawn? Simple, as yourself this question:
If I wore this to Grandma’s house, would she be embarrassed/offended/repulsed/etc.?
If the answer is “Yes”, then you shouldn’t wear it on an airplane.
I’m talking about:
- booty shorts
- crop tops
- shirts showing too much cleavage
- mini skirts
- etc.
Now even with my previous mention of jeans and t-shirts, there are some limits on those as well:
- t-shirts with inappropriate language
- t-shirts with pictures or drawings of half naked girls
- t-shirts you see in Spencer’s that’s have some sexual innuendo on them
- jeans that are all torn and ratted in the wrong places (butt, crotch, etc.)
I’m confident that my list above demonstrates outfits that your Grandmother wouldn’t be too happy seeing you in. And to be honest, most of your fellow travelers don’t really appreciate it either.
Did you know that: Inappropriate clothing can get you kicked off flights? A woman was kicked off a flight because her skirt was too short and her shirt was too tight. See the story here. Passengers wearing t-shirts with vulgar or inappropriate language have been asked to change before they board their planes.
Play it safe.
If you want to get on your flight without issue, just think of Grandma.
